Many people believe teachers unions exist to protect teachers. Sadly, teachers unions protect their own interests and fail to serve students.

A 2018 Project Veritas video exposed the corruption of teachers unions: “In this undercover investigation, Hamilton Township Education Association President David Perry details the steps the teachers union would take to protect a teacher who physically abused and threatened middle school students from losing their job.” This shocking evidence demonstrates teachers unions protecting abusive teachers and enabling the abuse of students. Hopefully, the protection of abusive teachers is an extreme and rare function of teachers unions.

Still, it remains clear that the union exists to serve itself – not teachers, good or bad. The average public school teacher in Florida makes $48,168 annually; meanwhile, the employees of the Florida Education Association, a prominent teacher’s union, are paid an average of $131,000 a year. What is this money going towards?

Much money goes towards left-leaning causes. Education should not be political, yet the Florida Education Association is a known contributor to the Democratic Party of Florida and other liberal organizations; in 2016 alone, they spent over $1.96 million dollars on political lobbying! Perhaps this explains the Critical Race Theory and radical sex ed agenda being pushed on students. Teachers unions should not be pushing controversial causes which many parents do not wish to be taught to their children.

The Florida Education Association is one of Florida’s biggest enemies working against increased school choice. If teachers unions take pride in providing quality public education, they should not have to force students to attend public schools; parents will want the best for their children. This union is not pursuing the student’s best interest. Instead, they are guarding their own interests and neglecting teachers and students alike.
